Frequently Asked Questions

Every family has questions when beginning their Montessori journey. Here are some that parents often wonder about.

A Montessori school is a learning environment based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. It emphasizes freedom within limits, respect for each child, and a deep trust in each child’s natural desire to learn. Children work with scientifically designed, hands-on materials that support exploration and independent discovery. Classrooms are intentionally made up of mixed-age groups, allowing younger children to learn from older peers and older children to reinforce their knowledge by helping others. Montessori schools promote curiosity, concentration, and confidence. They aim to nurture the whole child — academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

Dr. Maria Montessori developed her method for what she called the “universal child” — meaning it’s designed to support the natural development of all children, regardless of background or ability. That said, not every Montessori center is the right fit for every family or child. Each Montessori environment has its own community, rhythm, and approach. We encourage you to schedule a visit, observe the space, and see if this specific space feels right for your child.

In Montessori, the teacher is often called a “guide.” The guide serves as a careful observer, mentor, and facilitator rather than directing the class from the front. They move throughout the room, offering individualized instruction and connecting children with materials and lessons when each child is ready. Their role is to support—not direct—the child’s learning, allowing the child to explore, make discoveries, and develop at their own pace. Guides prepare and maintain the learning environment, ensuring it is clean, orderly, and rich with opportunities for independent learning. They support the development of independence and self-motivation by following the child’s lead—stepping back when the child is ready to work independently and offering help only when requested or necessary.

A typical day in a Montessori classroom begins with a long, uninterrupted work cycle. During this time, children freely choose activities based on their interests and developmental needs, while the teacher offers individual or small group lessons. Following the work period, children may participate in group gatherings, outdoor play, lunch, and a rest period. The schedule emphasizes consistency, independence, and freedom within clear boundaries, creating a calm and focused environment. Routines are intentional and predictable, helping children feel secure and confident throughout the day.

At Kensington Montessori, we stay true to the “prepared environment” Maria Montessori first created — a home-like setting where children feel safe, respected, and free to explore. Housed in a residential-style space, our school offers a warm, family atmosphere where strong bonds form between children, parents, and staff — building trust and a true sense of belonging. Our small class sizes ensure each child receives individualized attention, allowing their curiosity and confidence to flourish while their unique strengths and interests shine.

Our teachers are AMI-trained (Association Montessori Internationale), meaning they are deeply knowledgeable and skilled in delivering the authentic Montessori philosophy exactly as Maria Montessori intended. In addition to their Montessori training, our lead educator holds a double bachelor’s degree — a Bachelor of General Studies with a triple minor in Curriculum and Instruction, Early Learning, and Social Justice, and a Bachelor of Education — and has experience working as an elementary school teacher. This blend of academic achievement and classroom experience brings both depth and practicality to our program, ensuring a well-rounded, research-informed approach that complements the Montessori philosophy and supports every child’s development.

Additionally, Kensington Montessori benefits from its close proximity to a park with a playground and green space, as well as other community areas, which we regularly explore through outdoor learning and community-based activities.
